WNC Renters Help Renter Community Support

WNC Renter’s Help aims to provide support and solidarity with those who have been impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic in the High Country of North Carolina. We seek to prevent the unfair displacement of working-class individuals due to circumstances beyond their control, and urge rental companies to work with, not against, tenants during this time of crisis. Taking systematic community action to keep people in their homes is necessary to prevent further damage to people’s lives and the local economy beyond the health crisis.

Some ways we support renters include:

  • Contacting each person who indicates they are at risk of being evicted and creating a plan of action with them
  • Communicating with landlords in attempt to lessen the impact on tenants
  • Focusing media attention on landlords who refuse to work with tenants
  • Connecting tenants to legal support
  • Creating a space for renters to connect with others in similar situations
  • Conducting fundraisers to help individuals make rent

By employing these methods, we are able to collaborate with renters and highlight their agency in order to make decisions together on ways to move forward specific to their needs, lessen the power landlords have over individuals by creating a network of solidarity with renters, and amplify individual renter’s power through collective action.

WNC Renter’s Help is committed to renters’ financial, physical, and mental well-being for the long-term, not just during the pandemic. This means standing by renters throughout legal processes, assisting those who are impacted financially from eviction, late fees, and other fees in accessing food and other resources, finding new housing options, putting pressure on landlords to stop eviction proceedings, and more.

Working together is essential to keeping each other housed and safe. We understand landlords also face pressure to make their mortgages and pay their staff, but believe a community presence unifying renters is necessary. Our goal is not to vilify landlords but to urge them to seek disaster forbearance from their lending institutions and work with renters to overcome this crisis. Everyone should have housing, especially now. We cannot allow money to be prioritized over lives and we want to ensure landlords and mortgage lenders are doing their part to support renters through and beyond this unprecedented crisis.
